FAQs

Q: Who needs to use a pull-down rig?

A: The pull-down rig best suits teams and drivers that want to learn more about their car’s suspension. Furthermore, it best suits teams that are willing to put in the time testing. Dynamic suspension analysis is fairly advanced but we at Nelson Engineered Performance do our best to be efficient with your time and money. The procedures are mostly aimed at late models and modifieds from both the asphalt and dirt worlds but we can accommodate almost any car and setup.

Q: Why can’t I just use the recommendations from my chassis builder for chassis setup?

A: Chassis builder recommendations provide a great baseline starting point. However, no two race cars are exactly the same. Furthermore, race car setup is generally dependent on the feel of the driver. Therefore, standard recommendations are generally not enough. At Nelson Engineered Performance, we can integrate our tests with chassis builder recommendations to fine tune your car to your style and abilities.

Q: Do I need data/data acquisition?

A: We get asked this question a lot. The quick answer is no. You do not need data or data acquisition systems to use the pull-down service. While data acquisition can be extremely valuable, it is not mandatory. We have developed standardized tests and positions that allow us to analyze your dynamic suspension travel when no data is available.

Q: Will the pull-down make my car any faster?

A: The answer is no, the pull-down fixture will not make your car any faster. It is not a magician, it is simply a tool. Will a tape measure set your ride height? No, but it will tell you the info you need to set your ride height. The pull-down rig is the same concept. It will give you the information you need to adjust and make your car faster, but it will not magically make the car faster just by being on the rig. Its a lot like life, you get out what you put in.

Q: Am I going to learn anything working with Nelson Engineered Performance?

A: Yes, you will learn a lot when working with Nelson Engineered Performance. In fact, it is often important to remember to not get overwhelmed with the amount of information available on the pull-down rig or spring smasher. You will learn your car’s dynamic balance, wheel positions, and platform. You will also be able to identify and fix binds within your race car. We often focus on the low hanging fruit. Or, in other terms, the easiest speed to find. After that, teams often move into more advanced tests and procedures.

Q:How do I know what to do after a session on the pull-down rig?

A: Nelson Engineered Performance utilizes software and procedures developed by DRP Performance as well as proprietary procedures to give teams suggestions for any possible adjustments during and after a pull-down session.

Q:What does a typical session on the pull-down rig look like?

A: Teams should expect to spend most, if not all, of the day when testing on the rig. Every car is different, but most cars can take an hour or two to properly initially set up for testing. Teams should have a crew member or two available to help with changes and adjustments. Nelson Engineered Performance is primarily focused on the operation of the pull-down rig. While we are willing to lend a hand, adjustments and any work on the car is primarily done by the team members.

Q: What are the costs of your services?

A: Nelson Engineered Performance generally bills at $125/hour plus mileage/travel. However, we can give you a more accurate quote once we know more about your car and your goals for the session. Please do not hesitate to reach out for a free quote.
